Smoke On The Water, Fire In The Theatre

From OA
"Fire this morning heavily damaged the historic Georgia Theatre in downtown Athens, shrouding the central business district in smoke and knocking out electric and cell phone service to the area. Wilmot Greene, the building owner, said the building is a total loss but exterior walls are "probably alright." Green said he hopes to rebuild and he does have insurance. Greene has already talked with organizers of AthFest about holding AthFest events in the Classic Center or at Legion Field." (read more)

ATHICA Emerges III: Journeys

ATHICA Emerges III introduces Athens to exciting new work by three young local artists, and one artist team. Curator Mary C. Wilson and assistant curator Erin McIntosh selected the work from over two-dozen entries.

Excitingly, this year's exhibit veers away from the painting and sculptural works of the first two years of ATHICA's annual local emerging artists showcase, with new media, photo-based works and conceptual practices predominating. The four projects include two that explore personal journeys, both physical and virtual, and two that use inventive ways of recording and representing personal experiences.

Featuring: Jennifer Desormeaux, Layet Johnson & Charles Westfall, Robert August Peterson*, Robyn Waserman.

*Mr. Peterson's work will be sited at a new ATHICA satellite space at the Bottleworks complex at 286 Prince Avenue for which special hours are: Monday-Friday, 6-9:30 p.m., Saturday 5-8:30 p.m., Sunday 1-5 p.m., and by appointment.

ATHICA Gallery hours: Thursday 6-9 p.m., Friday-Sunday 1-6 p.m., and by appointment.

OH-O.K., Time Toy And Magnapop - BREAST CANCER AWARENESS BENEFIT

This Friday (5-29) Little Kings Shuffle Club on Hancock Avenue will showcase rare performances by legendary Athens bands Oh-O.K. (with members of Flash to Bang Time in tow) and Time Toy, as well as Linda Hopper and Ruthie Morris of Atlanta's sonic powerhouse Magnapop. According to Flash To Bang Time time-keeper and event organizer Charles Greenleaf, the show will benefit Ingrid Schorr, while bringing much-needed awareness to breast cancer, the single-most common cancer in women in the United States: "This promises to be a stellar evening benefiting Ingrid Schorr and raising breast cancer awareness. All in all, not a bad way to spend a summer's night while championing a great cause."

An auction featuring the art of Michael Oliveri, Sam Seawright, Laura Levine, Jill Carnes, Andy Cherewick and a host of others as well as collectibles and gifts will also take place. REMHQ has donated a copy of R.E.M. Hello autographed by Michael and David Belisle.
